The Wayne Taylor Racing No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team captured their maiden GTD victory in a summertime sprint at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. From a spin on the opening lap to capturing the checkered flag, the No. 45 Lamborghini GTD team officially tallied the first win for the Wayne Taylor Racing GTD program.
Entering the Chevrolet Grand Prix, Danny Formal had qualified the No. 45 to start from fifth for the two-hour, 40-minute race. Action escalated quickly as Formal had contact with the No. 021 Ferrari GTD in Turn 9 after the start, sliding the No. 45 back to the rear of the grid. Settling into the pace of the race, Formal began to chip away at positions ahead throughout his stint of the race.
Aiming to overcut GTD competitors on track in the first pit stop cycles, Formal came to pit lane from second in the running order and traded driving duty with Trent Hindman with just under two hours remaining.
Nearing the halfway mark, the field saw the first caution of the race, packing up the grid before a second round of pit stops. The No. 45 team made a strategy decision in effort to maintain their track position with a gamble to try to make it to the end of the race without another pit stop. As the rest of the GTD field pitted, Hindman cruised up to nearly a 30-second lead over second place in the GTD category. To make it to the end, the No. 45 team needed at least one caution. In the final 35 minutes, the lucky caution fell, allowing a slight bit of breathing room on the fuel save. Under 15 minutes to go saw the field under caution once again and would ultimately end in that condition, propelling the No. 45 DEX Lamborghini GTD team to their first victory since joining the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD class full time in 2024.
“I am very proud and excited for the whole team, our drivers and our partners at DEX Imaging and Lamborghini,” said Wayne Taylor, Team Owner. “This is a win that has been a long time coming and one we have been waiting for. The team’s execution was fantastic, and the grit and strategy called, shows the passion that everyone in our team brings to this program. It is a great day!”
“Started off to be a tough day and the incident on Lap 1 turned it into a strategy race for us,” said Travis Houge, Vice President and General Manager. “The team put their head down and stayed focused to get the result at the end. Very proud of this team and our drivers. Our first win in GTD for Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini and DEX Imaging!”
Trent Hindman, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “What a race! Whatever those Wayne Taylor Racing guys up on that pit box tell me, I believed. I trust them. They said we had it and I had all the faith in the world in them. The guys over the wall and Danny – they did an amazing job. I have been on the wrong side of these kind of races enough to know you what you have to do to get it and that is exactly what we did. So grateful for the whole DEX Wayne Taylor Racing team. It’s been a long time coming for us and glad it is here.”
Danny Formal, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “It was a crazy race. I got t-boned going into Turn 9 fighting for second at the start. Got on the back foot there and had to drive the whole stint with a broken rim. The vibration was abnormal. The team told me to keep on going and push through. Kind of had no feeling on my right arm and leg due to the vibration but the car was fantastic at race pace. We knew that coming in. The guys at Wayne Taylor Racing, everyone on that stand, we really truly deserve this win. We have had it close so many times this season. Trent did fantastic, had to drive two hours without water, he is an iron man! So proud of him, so proud of the team, so proud of DEX. We really deserved this win. This program is fantastic and it has been a long time coming.”
