As the Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo team entered their second event on the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship, it was nearly two months since the four-car stable had hit the track for the season opener. The weekend saw new PRO class driver, Nick Persing, sweep the weekend’s overall wins while Sunday’s Race 2 saw the Wayne Taylor Racing team capture a “perfect” podium with three class wins and an overall second place as they depart the weekend.
California native, Nick Persing, came to Rounds 3 and 4 of the LSTNA Championship seeking the podium after his learnings from the opening rounds back in March. In qualifying, Persing was able to grab his first PRO pole position to start Race 2. In Saturday’s first race, Persing stayed clean throughout the 50-minute sprint, within in distance to the leader before making a move in the iconic Corkscrew turn at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as a pass for the lead with single-digit minutes left on the clock. As Race1 ended under caution, Persing sailed on to his first PRO class win. For Race 2, starting on pole position, it was about capitalizing on the speed of the No. 8 WTR Lamborghini ST and Persing did just that. A late-race caution saw the field go back to green flag racing with under three minutes and it was all out battle to the finish between Persing and his WTR teammate in the No. 1 PRO, Danny Formal. The pair raced clean, and it was a drag race to the checkered flag, with Persing taking the win by only six-thousandths of a second at the finish line.
As the pair currently leading the PRO class championship entering Laguna Seca, Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson looked to continue their stellar performance around challenging 2.238-mile road course. Starting from pole position in Race 1, all looked to be smooth sailing for the No. 1 Lamborghini ST through the pit stop exchange between Formal to Ericsson. Nearing the end of the first 50-minute race, Ericsson and the No. 1 team unfortunately encountered a mechanical issue that forced the team to end their day early. Ready to rebound come Sunday, Ericsson started the race in the No. 1 Lamborghini ST and aiming to move forward from the fifth-place starting position. At the mandatory pit stop, Ericsson handed Formal the reins of the No. 1 and it was a fight to finish from there. With the restart at under three minutes to go, Formal was charging hard on his teammate, Persing, in effort to bring home the win. Formal pushed every inch he possibly could for a photo-finish to earn second place overall behind his WTR teammate.
For Anthony McIntosh and Brendon Leitch in the No. 69 PRO|AM, the pair were eager to stand on the podium for the second doubleheader event. During Race 1 as McIntosh was battling his way forward, the No. 69 went off course and unfortunately experienced damage that brought an end to their day after only completing seven laps. Sunday provided a chance for the No. 69 pairing to make up for Saturday’s result as Leitch did a stellar job in qualifying to start from pole position. Leitch continued to lead the PRO|AM class before swapping driving duties with McIntosh to finish the remainder of the 50-minute sprint. McIntosh soon found himself seeing the checkered flag fly to bring home the win in the PRO|AM class, their second victory of the 2025 LSTNA season.
Glenn McGee and Graham Doyle in the No. 10 AM started off the weekend with strong pace, qualifying on pole position and third for the doubleheader. Doyle saw the day look promising to start with leading the AM class, but an early incident on track changed the direction of the race for the No. 10 LST. Once McGee took over, it was all about gaining as many positions on track and finishing as high as possible given the post-race penalty. For Sunday’s Race 2, McGee quickly found his way to the front of the AM class and contending for the lead. Once in the lead, the No. 10 Lamborghini ST had control of the class. It was a smooth driver change and pit stop by the WTR team sent Doyle out in prime position for the second half of the race. Doyle brought home the victory for the No. 10 team and completed the “perfect” sweep of the weekend for the WTR LST team.
“I am so impressed with this LST team and certainly with our drivers,” said Wayne Taylor, Team Owner. “They all did spectacular this weekend, but a real big shout out to our entire team. All the guys from our sister programs worked really, really hard. The team is really gelling now, and our partnerships are coming into the position we all wanted early on. It takes time. Now we have a winning streak going on.”
“Today is a real testament to what we have built at Wayne Taylor Racing,” added Travis Houge, Team Principal, Wayne Taylor Racing. “After our LST results yesterday, we had a whole lot of work to get done and every person, representing all our programs, was here until all hours of the night to make sure we could have the performance we had today. Everyone did amazing.”
Next up for the Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo team will be Watkins Glen International for the third doubleheader of the season on June 20-21, 2025.
Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo Driver Quotes
Nick Persing, No. 8 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “It is kind of crazy that in my first weekend winning overall, I end up with a sweep. That was one of the most insane races I have ever done. When you have Danny Formal behind you, it is not a matter of if he is coming past you, it is more about when. Luckily the time ran out for him at the end. The drag race finish to the end was super close. This weekend has just been amazing. My home crowd is here, my friends, my family and my partners: Sentinel Resource Group, Fremont Bank and Boise State University. Big thank you to them. Without them, this weekend wouldn’t be possible. I also want to give a big thank you to Wayne Taylor Racing. They gave both Danny, Hampus and I amazing cars. We dominated today. I am just hyped to continue onto the next round.”
Danny Formal, No. 1 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “First I want to congratulate Nick. Double victory in such a competitive category. Congrats to the WTR team for winning all three of their classes today and sweeping the podium. It has been an up-and-down weekend for the team and Nick has been the outlier car for everyone, so really proud of that. It was a difficult weekend for Hampus and I and to end up P2 is fantastic. I wanted to give them win to the guys – they deserve it. I tried my hardest. Amazing race to the finish with my teammate. I thought I got it. Amazing drag race to the finish. I tried to side draft as much as I could and six-thousandths-of-a-second to the finish; that’s all I had in it. I also want to thank Hampus – he gave me a complete car with amazing tires. Super happy and we still have the Championship lead. Looking forward to the next one.”
Hampus Ericsson,No. 1 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “Definitely a weekend to remember. The team did such a great job the entire weekend. We faced so many problems with the car, and we never stopped fighting. In the end, finally, finishing on the podium in P2 with Nick winning, Tony and Brendon in P3 and Wayne Taylor Racing taking the full overall podium, was great. I want to thank the boys who stayed up all night to repair the cars and got them ready to race. We were super fast out there and let’s bring on Watkins Glen.”
Brendon Leitch, No. 69 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO|AM: “Awesome weekend here at Laguna Seca. It was a tricky race for us yesterday with Tony getting caught up with something in Turn 1 and having an early finish. The race on Sunday was great. I was able to give Tony a nice car in a good spot and we came away with a third overall and a win for the weekend. Massive thanks to the team and massive thanks to the WTR mechanics for all their hard work. Massive thanks to Tony for his amazing drive today. Super excited for the rest of the season.”
Anthony McIntosh, No. 69 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO|AM: “Brendon and I have been driving together for a while and the last seven races, we have won like five of them. Then we had a couple DNFs and you almost become a victim of your own success. You are used to taking first place and then it was actually shocking what happened yesterday. But the team – I can’t say enough of this team – the team is really what made this possible today by putting the car back together after my mistake yesterday. I just can’t say enough. Without Wayne Taylor Racing, we would be nowhere.”
Graham Doyle, No. 10 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo AM: “Good day for the Wayne Taylor Racing team, good for everybody. The guys put so much work into last night to get the car repaired after yesterday’s incident. We fought back and were able to grab valuable points and the win today. Great way to cap off the weekend and ready to go to Watkins Glen.”
Glenn McGee, No. 10 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo AM: "Yesterday was a tough day. It was interesting yesterday trying to manage the damage through the race and in the end, the team had a lot of work to do overnight. All the guys from all the programs in Wayne Taylor Racing came over last night to put the cars back together and this was the best Super Trofeo car I have ever had. I could put the car wherever I wanted. I went from 17th to the class lead, which was my job before handing it off to Graham. The car was so amazing, it was a breeze to make happen.”
