2019 ROAD AMERICA QUALIFYING REPORT

Date: Aug. 3, 2019
Event: IMSA Road Race Showcase (Round 8 of 10)
Series: Daytona Prototype international division of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
Location: Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (4.048-mile, 14-turn road course)
Pole Winner: Dane Cameron of Team Penske (1:48.715 at134.045 mph)
Result: 8th by Renger van der Zande (1:50.799 at 131.524 mph)

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R will start Sunday’s IMSA Road Race Showcase from the outside of the fourth row after IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying Saturday at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Renger van der Zande, who with full-time co-driver Jordan Taylor is seeking the team’s first-ever Road America victory Sunday, clocked a fast lap of 1 minute, 50.799 seconds at 131.524 mph around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course. It was good for eighth among the 35 car-and-driver combinations that will take the green flag for Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute race. Prior to the fast lap on his final tour of the circuit, van der Zande actually was within two corners of completing a potential top-five lap when the red flag came out for an LMP2-class competitor stuck in a gravel trap. The Dutch driver and the rest of the field were able to complete just two more laps after the three-minute, 30-second red-flag period.

“I think the lap would have been like a high 49 and the red flag just blew it,” said van der Zande, who with Taylor finished fourth from the fourth starting position here a year ago. “I had two corners to go when the red flag came out and I couldn’t finish that lap. That’s the danger of qualifying, sometimes – you get a red flag and that basically ruins your qualifying. After the red flag, I felt the front tires were gone for the peak of the tire but I managed to do a reasonable lap time for the condition of the tires. It could have been at least eight tenths quicker, for sure, maybe more. So it was very unfortunate. I’m not happy with this qualifying. We have no chance against the others, but you want to at least perform to the ultimate best of your car and that’s not showing with this qualifying result.”

The top-five qualifiers for Sunday’s IMSA Road Race Showcase are:

1. Acura Team Penske (No. 6 Acura DPi) Dane Cameron and Juan Montoya (1:48.715 at 134.045 mph)

3. Mazda Team Joest (No. 77 Mazda DPi) Oliver Jarvis and Tristan Nunez (1:48.949 at 133.757 mph)

mph)
