The No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 entered their second appearance at the Grand Prix of Long Beach as the sun fell upon the streets in SoCal. Saturday’s 100-minute sprint race opened the regular championship season for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. After a mechanical issue in Practice 2 and Qualifying, the No. 45 Lamborghini GTD started 16th on the grid.
Danny Formal made his sophomore start at Long Beach with the goal to progress forward. Just over 20 minutes in, the field went full course caution and Formal had already gained positions in the short time since the drop of the green flag. As the No. 45 team chose to stay out as some competitors came to pit lane. Once back to green, Formal continued to challenge for positions on track in the top ten before coming to pit lane for the single pit stop and driver change.
Trent Hindman then took over the chrome No. 45 Lamborghini GTD for his first racing laps around Long Beach since 2021 with one hour remaining. Battling alongside fellow GTD competitors and balanced pit sequences, Hindman continued to seek moving forward but got shuffled a few positions back on his out lap. With only one additional caution after halfway, the tight track and green flag racing proved difficult and it was a mission to collect solid championship points to end the day. Hindman brought the No. 45 Lamborghini home in 11th-place
“The weekend started off fairly rough,” said Wayne Taylor, Team Owner. “Our GTD team had a reasonable Practice 1 and then some mechanical issues happened resulting in us losing the next practice and qualifying. Going into the race, we honestly didn’t know what we had against everybody. The team and drivers did a great job moving up the field. We came in for a pit stop – the guys handled that really well – and then for the rest of the race, we maintained pace with what we had. Overall, it was a successful weekend based on the challenges we faced. The guys did a great job.”
The Wayne Taylor Racing GTD team will head to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca next month on May 9-11, 2025, for the next sprint race of the season.
Trent Hindman, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “I feel for our DEX Imaging Lamborghini GT3 team after two events in a row of misfortune. We weren’t able to get a qualifying lap after some electronic troubles and here it is so important. The long races, more open race tracks you can fight your way forward, but here qualifying is so critical. We had a killer pit stop and got track position, but didn’t have the pace to hold on to it. We will keep fighting as we always do, but big thanks to all the WTR crew for all their work and I look forward to Laguna Seca.”
Danny Formal, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “It was a very difficult weekend for us, fighting mechanical gremlins since Practice 2 and not being able to qualify. I only had nine laps under my belt before starting the race. We started 16th and made good progress coming into the pits around the top ten. We did a fantastic pit stop and jumped two positions. I’m so proud of Trent, it was not an easy weekend for him or me. So proud of this DEX Imaging Lamborghini GT3 team. We will keep on working and pushing and hoping for some luck in Laguna Seca.”
