The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 finished fourth at the Motul Course de Monterey Powered by Hyundai N. In a race where strategy and tires played heavy roles, the Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport (WTRAndretti) team fought a roller coaster race to collect vital championship points.
After qualifying in fifth position, Ricky Taylor completed the opening stint of the two hour, 40-minute sprint race before a slew of cautions saw the blue and black Acura machine come to pit lane for four tires, fuel and driver change to co-driver Filipe Albuquerque. Albuquerque would retain control behind the wheel of the No. 10 for the remainder of the race. Despite pitstop cycles shuffling the team towards the back of the GTP field, Filipe would fight his way up into the top five to ultimately finish fourth.
“After a couple of tough races, it is nice to come away with a result,” said Ricky Taylor. “Obviously, we always want to be fighting for wins. The competitors were strong this weekend. This wasn’t the strongest performance we have had this year in terms of pace on track, but we learned a lot. Next year we will come back to Laguna Seca and it’ll be a completely new racetrack with the new pavement. I’m really proud of the WTRAndretti team. I think the strategy was really good. We need to watch the race back to learn a couple things, of what other teams did with tires, but Filipe drove a great race. We are looking forward to Watkins Glen. It has always been a good track for us.”
“What a crazy race, up and down,” said Filipe Albuquerque. “When I got into the car, we were P8 – nearly last. We recovered well and at one point and we were P3. We were really confident in the car that we had, I was catching everybody, and I was like ‘We are going’, so the race was on. I was super motivated because when you are going forward, it’s cool. In the last stint, behind the Porsche and BMW, the tire pressures went sky high and I was just a passenger, which was a bit frustrating, and I couldn’t do anything about it, sliding all over the surface and running slow, so we need to analyze better. We learned a lot about the car and setup. Still positive to end up P4. Ricky did an amazing start and good job in qualifying. We will keep going forward.”
“Not what we were expecting, but I guess at least we finished the race,” said Wayne Taylor. “We stayed in third position in the championship, lost points to the Porsche and the 31. We just didn’t have a good weekend. We had some issues in the pit stops that we really have to look at and see what went wrong because we lost a couple of positions in the pits on both stops. We will go to the next one and see if we can get on the podium.”
WTRAndretti now refocuses to endurance racing in a little over a month’s time at Watkins Glen International for the Sahlen’s Six Hours at The Glen on June 25th, 2023. Full season drivers Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque will be joined by Louis Deletraz as the third driver of the trio for the six-hour event.
