2019 IWSC Laguna Seca Qualifying Report

Date: Sept. 14, 2019
Event: Monterey SportsCar Championship (Round 9 of 10)
Series: Daytona Prototype international division of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
Location: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (2.238-mile, 11-turn road course)
Pole Winner: Ricky Taylor of Team Penske (1:15.035 at107.373 mph)
Result: 3rd by Jordan Taylor (1:15.488 at 106.729 mph)

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R will start Sunday’s Monterey SportsCar Championship from the inside of the second row after IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying Saturday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California.

Jordan Taylor, who with full-time co-driver Renger van der Zande is seeking the team’s seventh podium position in its last seven outings at Laguna Seca, clocked a fast lap of 1 minute, 15.488 seconds at 106.729 mph around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course. It was the team’s best qualifying effort of the season and was good for third among the 32 car-and-driver combinations that will take the green flag for Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute race. This year’s previous best this season was fifth in qualifying for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen the last weekend in June.

“I think it was a good session – we’re the top Cadillac in P3, and that’s a good place to start,” said Taylor, who qualified on the pole here a year ago for the team’s third pole in its previous four Laguna Seca outings. “I do not think the fastest car will necessarily win this race. I think we qualified with a quick car, but I think we have an overall strong racecar. In the long run, I think our car is going to be very strong tomorrow. It would have been nice to be on the front row, but I think we will have a good view going into turn one with a lot of guys behind us and, hopefully, we can keep it clean the first couple of laps and run our race. I am hoping we can go forward, pass (Juan) Montoya (the No. 2 qualifier) and then Ricky (Taylor, brother and pole-winner) and I can just battle each other (laughs).”

The top-five qualifiers for Sunday’s Monterey SportsCar Championship are:

1. Acura Team Penske (No. 7 Acura DPi) Ricky Taylor and Helio Castroneves (1:15.035 at107.373 mph)
